This month we are featuring famous bead artist Heidi Kummli as our speaker. Her presentation is about Heidi’s journey with beads.

Heidiʼs journey with beads started in the early 80ies when she was first gifted a small container of beads. She had no idea these amazing little pieces of glass with holes in them would be her lifeʼs passion and way of making a living.

The slide show follows the changes and growth of her work over the years following her life’s journey and her spiritual connection to the universe

Heidi has written two books The Art of Bead Embroidery coauthored with bead artist and good friend Sherry Serafini and her latest book TheSpirit of Bead Embroidery.  

In the Spirit of Bead Embroidery, Heidi pulls the reader in to explore the spiritual side of life and how to work this into our bead work and art.

Heidi hopes to share her knowledge of Bead Embroidery and the peace and beauty that surrounds her in daily life with her students and those around her.

May 18 Sunday, Class  Mosaic Necklace with Twisted Fringe

Students will start by learning how to make a beautiful mosaic center piece using two part epoxy clay.

After mixing and spreading the clay into a metal setting they inlay a vintage button and various beads and components. Heidi will teach various ways of adding components such as using a beading needle, tooth picks, popsicle sticks, or a crystal katana tool.

While the clay takes a few hours to cure, once the inlay is done and glued to the suede foundation the students will learn making twisted fringe. The fringe is added on a separate piece of suede to be attached later.

This can be challenging to learn at first but once you get the feel of it,  it's fun to do.  With the fringe done and the clay dry, next you learn basic bead embroidery techniques to add beads and cabochons around the mosaic center piece.

Last step is to learn to line the pendant with cardboard, add the suede backing and coiling for stringing later, attach the fringe and complete the piece with a simple edging.

Heidi tries to design her classes so the student goes home with a finished piece but sometimes 6 hours just isnʼt enough. With the detailed instructions included in the kit, you can finish later if necessary.

We are featuring Christen Brown of The Store on the Corner as our speaker. She has been a guest speaker once before. We welcome her return.

 

Her program is on Ribbonwork Gardens based on her book.

Please visit her website to see her multiple works in ribbons beads, buttons and tassels.  

Because the next day is Easter Sunday, her class will be scheduled on a different date. Details of her class will be published on our website.

Paulette Baron is a nationally known bead artist who is a repeating instructor at Bead and Button Show.

She has illustrated and is a coauthor of the book Beading Across America.

Her presentation for the S. D. Bead Society is called Evolution of a Design, which follows the trajectory of her work.  It shows how she creates totally different designs by using the same variation of peyote stitch.  It is always great learning experience to see and follow the thought processes of an artist in design.

March 16, 2014 Sunday  New Class

She is teaching Spike Me a new class for 2014 which is debuting at Bead and Button Show this year.

In this class you will learn how to:

·        Create spiral components and vary their size

·        Mix pearls and seed beads together to get the look of elegant spirals

·        Attach them to a double cord to create a dynamic neck piece

·        Learn a modified version of peyote stitch to create these spirals

·        Learn how to combine crystals, pearls and seed beads in a new approach

Gum drops may be substituted for spikes if you wish.

Marcia DeCoster presents Modular Design

Mingei Museum, Balboa Park, San Diego

10 a.m. to 12 noon

Marcia DeCoster is an internationally famous bead artist, designer and book author. We are very privileged to have her as a contributing member of the San Diego Bead Society.  

Her Presentation is on her Modular Design philosophy and teaching techniques.  When she creates a lovely element, that element might end up as part of a necklace, a standalone pendant, a luxurious ring, or an earring or as the bracelet called Pacific Morning Glory our featured class this month.

In all these metamorphoses, the design unit keeps its basic construction, but to a viewer they all look like brand new creations because the colors, outlines and embellishments change its appearance completely.
